Kauai is often called “The Garden Island”, a nickname which, as soon as you arrive, you’ll realize is spot-on. It’s the oldest island in the Hawaiian chain, known for its pristine beaches and rolling hills covered in rainforest and tropical foliage. Haena, located near the end of the road where the famed Na Pali Coast begins, has become a popular destination for travelers seeking a peaceful and secluded beach vacation. Popular for Haena beach and its swimming, beachfront camping and surf, if you want to make Haena your next vacation stay, browse vacation rentals in Haena from rental homes, condos and beachfront villas with incredible views of Haena beach.
Haena is located on the northern shore of Kauai, about a 15-minute drive from the bigger town of Hanalei. It offers visitors a chance to experience the island's laid-back lifestyle, with friendly locals, picturesque scenery, and plenty of outdoor activities. Here, you can take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in a paradise that truly feels like another world.
“Being with my wife and children in Kauai, seeing old friends there, being on the beach, painting, paddleboarding. Sitting under a Kauai moon with a bonfire going, buddies around. Those are the things that kind of make my world turn.” – Pierce Brosnan, actor
Haena's history dates back to ancient times when the area was a thriving center for taro farming, once the primary staple crop of the Hawaiian people. Over time, the area became a hub for trade and commerce, and by the 19th century, it also became a popular spot for sugarcane farming. Today, Haena is a peaceful community of about 500 people, with a mix of locals and tourists.
One of the main draws of Haena is, of course, our beaches. The community is home to several famous beaches, including Haena Beach –– widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Hawaii. We have to agree.
With crystal-clear water, soft white sand, and calm waters for swimming, and snorkeling, you’ll never want to go back home. Other popular beaches in the area to add to your itinerary include Ke'e Beach and Tunnels Beach. Ke'e Beach is located at the end of the road and is the starting point for the famous Kalalau Trail. This beach has a protected lagoon that is ideal for children and beginners. Meanwhile, Tunnels Beach is known for its incredible snorkeling opportunities, with an abundance of marine life to discover just below the surface of the water.
For those who love to hike, Haena has plenty of options to choose from. Aside from the famous Kalalau Trail, visitors can also explore the nearby Hanakapiai Falls Trail, which takes hikers through lush forests and across streams to reach a stunning waterfall. While it is a challenging walk, the reward at the end is well worth the effort.
There are a variety of lodging options available to travelers visiting Haena. The community has several vacation rental properties, including condos and private homes, which can be rented by the week or month. There are also several hotels and resorts located in the nearby town of Hanalei, which offer luxurious accommodations and a range of amenities.
As it is a state park, visitors to Haena Beach are required to have a reservation to enter the area. The reservation system was put in place to manage the number of visitors and protect the delicate ecosystem of the beach. It’s why we have such a beautiful community even though it’s a popular tourist destination. Reservations can be made online and are required for parking and beach access.
If you're looking for a more laid-back activity, be sure to visit the town's local farmers market, which takes place every Tuesday and Thursday. Here, visitors can find fresh produce, handmade crafts, and delicious snacks, all while chatting with friendly locals.
The neighborhood of Haena is small and tight-knit, with a strong sense of community spirit. The town is known for its friendly atmosphere, and visitors can expect to be greeted with warm hospitality wherever they go. It’s home to a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops, which offer a range of dining and shopping options for visitors.
Though Haena is simply lovely all year round, the best time of year to visit is during the summer months, when the weather is mild and dry. Winters can be rainy and windy, with strong winds and currents. It's important to exercise caution when swimming or surfing, particularly in winter.
